The CARLISLE® Tire and Rubber Company is founded in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Initially, the company produces bicycle and car tire tubes.
The PHOENIX Hatches
The company is renamed to "Harburger Gummiwaren-Fabrik PHOENIX A.G."
Synthesis for the Future
During World War II, Japan cuts off access to natural rubber plantations in Southeast Asia, and rubber processors must find new sources. In December 1945, CARLISLE® introduces hose production from synthetic rubber.
A Good Location in Kampen
Hertel continues to grow: in 1961, the opening of a new rubber factory lays the foundation for the Kampen location.
Nobel Prize for EPDM
German chemist Karl Ziegler and Italian Giulio Natta are awarded the Nobel Prize for their method of industrial production of EPDM.

Hertel develops its first roof sealing membrane from butyl rubber.
A brand on the runway
In collaboration with DSM, the first European EPDM roofing membrane is developed, marking the start of the new brand HERTALAN®. The brand name is derived from the words “Hertel” and “Keltan” (a brand of DSM).

PHOENIX AG is acquired by Continental AG and merged with ContiTech AG in 2007.
Something New in the East
A new location for the production of HERTALAN® roof sealing membranes and accessories is established in Romania. HERTALAN® takes a new path. Through a management buyout, the roofing division is spun off from the Hertel Group and becomes an independent company called HERTALAN® Rubber Products B.V. The company's passion for EPDM continues to thrive.
Management takes a new path
The roofing division of PDT is spun off from the Continental Group through a management buyout in order to continue producing technically high-quality elastomer products on an independent basis. In addition to the Hamburg-Harburg location, a second production site is established in Waltershausen, Thuringia.

CARLISLE® Companies decides to purchase PDT, which fits excellently into its strategic European portfolio.
Finally United
CARLISLE® Companies Inc. also purchases HERTALAN® Rubber Products B.V. as part of its European growth strategy.

CARLISLE® Companies acquires a company specializing in the production of construction and industrial sealing compounds.
A new factory for production and ACADEMY
New production facility in Waltershausen, Thuringia: A state-of-the-art new plant has been built on a 11,600 m² indoor area in the Gothaer Straße 44 location in Waltershausen, which combines a large production hall for RESITRIX® EPDM roofing membranes, a logistics hall with an extension for administration, and a training center for CARLISLE® ACADEMY under one roof.
Foundation stone for the expansion of the Waltershausen plant
A new, 5,400 m² hall with production and storage space is being built here. In addition, new machines for the production of RESITRIX® EPDM roofing membranes are being purchased to meet the constantly increasing demand for this unique product. The expansion of the Thuringian production facility represents CARLISLE®'s largest investment in Europe to date.
CARLISLE® CM Europe expands portfolio
CARLISLE® CM Europe is following the strategy of its US parent company and expanding its portfolio from the EPDM core business to other building materials produced by CARLISLE® US. In addition to Europe, the Middle East is also becoming an important sales region.
